Compost
In the UK, around 40% of food waste ends up in landfill. It's a staggering 14.8 million tonnes of food waste annually!
Why is composting worth it?
Decomposing organic waste in landfills sites is a major contributor of greenhouse gases. Biodegradable landfill waste generates methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. By composting organic waste including food and garden waste, methane emissions are significantly reduced and less energy demand on transporting waste.
Homemade compost is great for the garden and reduces the need for dodgy chemical fertilizers. Also, compost increases the health of soils and better for crops and plants.
Anaerobic digestion (AD)
If you don't have access to a garden to set up a compost, then see if your local council collects waste for anaerobic digestion.
AD is a proven technology that efficiently breaks down organic matter to produce biogas. The biogas is then combusted to produce electricity and heat. The biogas can also be converted to pure biomethane to be added into the mains gas grid, or even as a renewable transport fuel.
Action - if your council does not provide food waste collections then start a campaign and get them to trial collections.
